Useful information

Materials for a materials examination

Objects, samples, packaging, provenance and necessary documents.

For the first enquiry

  • A description of the objects, event and required result.
  • Photographs of the objects, packaging and markings.
  • Information about the place and circumstances of discovery, to the extent relevant to the task.
  • Information about the provenance, sampling location and storage conditions of comparison samples.
  • A ruling, court order, questions and necessary case materials.
  • The full opinion with appendices and source materials — for a review.

Transfer and preservation

Agree the transfer procedure before sending anything. Do not mix objects and samples or alter their condition for the initial enquiry. Report any cleaning, repairs, repainting, damage to packaging or other actions carried out. Packaging and handling requirements are determined individually with regard to the material type, condition and procedural status.

Discuss an examination

Describe the object and task. The scope of the preliminary consultation and examination terms are agreed for the specific task.

How data is processed: Personal Data Processing Policy. Attach only the materials needed; where possible, conceal unnecessary data about other people.

For physical objects, it is important to preserve the packaging, keep objects stored separately and retain information about sample provenance.

Attachments: up to 10 files of up to 10 MB each, with a maximum combined size of 15 MB. If a file is rejected, the enquiry is not sent.
